Uses

Areas where such a system could prove useful are numerous. Any kind of traditional server program that listens for a connection from a client and then does some processing will benefit from spreading its load over many servers. Even services that don't need to access secondary storage when servicing requests will benefit from reduced administration, since the programs and configuration can be kept in one central location.

Similarly workstations that are accessing common secondary storage (whether it be load to load programs or user data) can benefit from using collective memory as a cache (Often the total memory present in workstations will exceed that of the file server they are using).
